Mindfulness for Beginners

Mindfulness for Beginners

Mindfulness for Beginners - Audiobook by Jon Kabat-Zinn

This an excellent, gentle and easily accessible introduction.

It achieves what it sets out to do, which is to provide a philosophical framework for a meditation practice and the very basics of starting one.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD. is executive director at the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. He is the founder and former director of the UMMC Stress Reduction Clinic and an associate professor of medicine in the division of preventive and behavioral medicine.

Using mindfulness meditation, Kabat-Zinn works to help people reduce stress and deal with chronic pain, and a variety of illnesses, particularly breast cancer. He was a trainer for the 1984 U.S. Men's Olympic Rowing Team and is especially interested in reducing the stress-related problems in the inner city and in prison populations.

John Kabat-Zinn has served as a recognized bridge between science and meditation. With Mindfulness for Beginners, he offers the definitive course designed specifically to introduce new students to the proven benefits of mindfulness practice, including: stress reduction, alleviation of depression, chronic pain relief, and more.

In general, meditative practices are divided into concentration practices (narrowing the attention) and mindfulness practices (awareness is expanded in a detached way). On the this CD, all of the practices are termed mindfulness practices, but the CD actually contains both types which in essence are about attending to different aspects of reality in different ways.

Master the Art of Active Listening ~ Levo League

Master the Art of Active Listening ~ Levo League

Great post from the Levo League - find out more at the link below

"Ashamed as I am to admit it, I’ve always had a hard time listening well. My mind goes a mile a minute, and while I try to process the things being said to me in conversation as best I can, I don’t always catch everything. Maybe you remember when a former manager berated me for zoning out while we were in the middle of a conversation. Needless to say, being a good listener hasn’t always been my strong suit, and I’m not proud of that.

But lucky for me, we aren’t born with active listening skills; we develop them by learning and then practicing them—so maybe there’s hope for me yet…!

Levo spoke with Terri McCullough during yesterday’s Office Hours. While McCullough today holds the incredibly powerful position as Executive Director of the Tory Burch Foundation, she met playwright and activist Anna Deavere Smith years back, and helped her build her nonprofit, Anna Deavere Smith Works, to support art that delved into social issues. It was Deavere Smith, author of the book Talk to Me: Listening Between the Lines, who taught McCullough the art of active listening—a skill she herself used to create better characters for her plays.

The Chinese word for “listen” is t─źng. It’s composed of two characters, one which makes the word for “ear,” the other which stands for the eyes, undivided attention, and the heart. When we listen, we should be using our ears, obviously, but also our eyes, our undivided attention, and our hearts. Basically, we should be listening with our whole selves.

McCullough said one of the most important factors, when it comes to active listening, is that you’re not just sitting there waiting for your turn to speak. You need to really, deeply hear what the other person has to say, process it, and demonstrate that you understood what was said.

So if you want to be a better active listener—and I know I do!—McCullough pointed us in the direction of the things she’s learned throughout her diverse career in politics and non-profits.

Active listening is a powerful tactic....." to read more go to

Why taking risks improves self confidence: Danijela Bule at TEDxYale

Why taking risks improves self confidence: Danijela Bule at TEDxYale

This is a TedxYale  talk from Danijela Bule. Here, she talks about having the confidence to take risks do the things that can make your life a success. With the risks you take - your confidence grows

Danijela is a sophomore in Saybrook College and an avid TED watcher, thanks to her roommate. She came to the United States from Croatia when she was seven with her parents and three sisters. She will most likely be an anthropology major here at Yale and is applying to study abroad in Argentina for her junior year (fingers crossed). She loves writing and hopes to be cool enough to work for the New Yorker one day. For now, English class essays will do.

Is Facebook Good Or Bad For Your Self-Esteem?

Is Facebook Good Or Bad For Your Self-Esteem?

I think you will enjoy this post from Psychology Today

"Does Facebook enhance your self-esteem or does the popular method of connecting with people and "making friends," actually detract from a strong sense of self? There appears to be conflicting perceptions and evidence regarding this question.

Facebook has more than 750 million users worldwide. It facilitates people keeping in touch online with a network of "friends" and the size of these networks varies from a handful to hundreds of thousands. One of the things that has not been clear is whether there is any relationship between the number of friends a person has and the number of their real-life friends. Some experts have observed anectodally that social network friends are very different than real-life friends.

To provide a more scientific perspective, researcher Geraint Rees, and his colleagues at the University College of London examined the fMRI brain scans of 125 frequent Facebook users. After the scans, the number of online and offline friends were recorded. The researchers reported that the typical subject had on average, 300 friends on Facebook. They concluded that having more friends online did not significantly make particular regions of the brain larger or more active. However, the researchers concluded there was a positive correlation between the number of friends the subjects had online with the number of friends they had offline.

effrey Hancock, a professor of communication at Cornell University and author of a study on Facebook's psychological effects, argues that Facebook boosts self-esteem: "Unlike a mirror, which reminds us of who we really are and may have a negative effect on self-esteem if that image doesn't match with our idea, Facebook can show a positive version of ourselves. We're not saying that it's a deceptive version of self, but it's a positive one."

A study by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., published in Cyberpsychology Behavior and Social Networking found that viewing and editing your Facebook profile could boost your self-esteem. This research is based on Objective Self-Awareness theory, as reported by Adoree Durayappah, in a Psychology Today article. The theory suggests that ...." Read more at

Friday Fsh Recipe - Caribean Fish Balls For Your Party

Friday Fsh Recipe - Caribean Fish Balls For Your Next Party

Here's a quick and tasty appetizer to serve at your next party, fish balls. With hints of true Caribbean flavors, these fish balls are a bit spicy, with a crunchy exterior and fluffy interior. By using fresh cod (any white fish will work), you have something similar to fish cakes, but with more Caribbean vibe.

Developing Your Creativity

Developing Your Creativity

Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way has been around 1992. With the basic principle that creative expression is the natural direction of life, Julia Cameron and Mark Bryan lead you through a comprehensive twelve-week program to recover your creativity from a variety of blocks, including limiting beliefs, fear, self-sabotage, jealousy, guilt, addictions, and other inhibiting forces, replacing them with artistic confidence and productivity.

" I can only imagine the number of people this book has opened up in twenty years. Though I came across it about seven years ago, I didn't pick it up until recently and, as I work on new writing projects, it's helped me become much more prolific.

From a health perspective, when our artistic sides are fed, we may laugh more easily, understand ourselves and others with greater depth, and feel more satisfied with life.

If you're looking to nurture your artistic side a bit more, this book may help you do just that." Jacqueline Smith

Friday Fish Recipe - Blazing Jamaican Peppered Shrimp.

How to make Jamaican style pepper shrimp as you'd find being sold by the roadside in Middle Quarters in Jamaica. This spicy shrimp recipe is true to it's Jamaican heritage and has that classic Caribbean flavor and heat. Jamaican peppered shrimp is a lovely side dish for your next party or BBQ. It is a very hot dish.

Affirmations To Boost Your Self Esteem

Affirmations To Boost Your Self Esteem

Working as a Life and Career Coach, the issues raised most often by my clients are confidence and self esteem.  Self esteem is about valuing ourselves and it is a first step on the road to having the confidence to go out there into the world and contribute our gifts.

Working each day with a set of affirmations really can help.  This set of affirmations from Louise Hay, used regularly, really could help you.

Find yourself a quiet spot - same place and same time each day - relax and let yourself listen.

Just let go and believe.
