How To Welcome Back the Sun for Yule

Winter solstice (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) How To Welcome Back the Sun for Yule There are a lot of different celebrations going on at this time of the year for many different reasons. Hanukkah, Ramadan, Christmas, Kwanzaa etc and, of course, the  Winter Solstice , or  Yule . At the heart of this is a celebration of the change of the season.  Due to the  rotation and tilt of the earth the days shorten and our part of the world goes dark. So on the 21st of December, the shortest day we celebrate in good faith that the sun will return.   The ancients knew that the Winter Solstice was the longest night of the year -- and that meant that the sun was beginning its long journey back towards earth. It was a time of celebration, and for rejoicing in the knowledge that soon, the warm days of spring would return, and the dormant earth would come back to life. Because this is a celebration of thanks for light, it is a time for fires and candles as symbols of the sun. It is a time for b

Friday Recipe - Veracruz-Style Red Snapper

Friday Recipe - Veracruz-Style Red Snapper Fish “Veracruz” is an  “authentic” Mexican recipe If you don’t want to do this in individual portions, you can certainly do it in a regular casserole dish, but you’ll probably need to give it a few extra minutes. Simply use the same fork-flaking doneness test as shown in the clip. Flakiness never lies.   Other than a few minutes of slicing, this couldn’t be easier. Serve simply with some chips, or over rice for a more substantial meal. A ny white, flaky fish will work. Thanks to  http://foodwishes.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/veracruz-style-red-snapper-new-take-on.html Ingredients for 2 servings:   2 boneless red snapper filets, about 7 oz each cayenne,  salt and pepper to taste 2 tbsp olive oil 1/2 white onion  diced 3 cloves garlic  minced 1 tablespoon capers 1 tablespoon caper brine 1 large jalapeno, sliced, seeded 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved 1/3 cup sliced Castelvetrano green olives, or any green olive 2 ta

Friendship: Seven Tips for Making New Friends.

Friendship: Seven Tips for Making New Friends. This post is from Gretchen Rubin who is a thought-provoking and influential writer on happiness.  Ancient philosophers and scientists agree: strong social ties are the KEY to happiness. You need close, long-term relationships; you need to be able to confide in others; you need to belong; you need to get and give support. Studies show that if you have five or more friends with whom to discuss an important matter you’re far more likely to describe yourself as “very happy.” Not only does having strong relationships make it far more likely that you take joy in life, but studies show that it also lengthens life (incredibly, even more than stopping smoking), boosts immunity, and cuts the risk of depression. “Okay, okay,” you’re thinking, “I get it — but it’s not that easy to make new friends.” Here are some strategies to try, if you’re eager to make friends but are finding it tough: 1.  Show up . Just as Woody Allen said that

(Photo credit: Wikipedia ) While more cautious fans may want to pick and choose among the previously released individual volumes of Monty Python for their collection, true Pythonites will want to own this definitive, 14-volume DVD-only boxed set that contains all 45 episodes (in chronological order) of Monty Python's Flying Circus .    This "persistently silly" collection encompasses three-and-a-half seasons of dead parrots, cross-dressing lumberjacks, loonies, upper class twits, and spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, baked beans, spam, spam, and spam. Click past the occasional clunker and go directly to such signature sketches as the Ministry of Silly Walks, the Spanish Inquisition, the Fish-Slapping Dance, the Dead Parrot Sketch, the Lumberjack Song, the Cheese Shop, the Argument Clinic, and Nudge, Nudge.
