Treat Yourself With Kindness for Success A growing body of research, including  new studies  by Berkeley’s Juliana Breines and Serena Chen, suggests that treating yourself with kindness and having  self-compassion,  rather than building self-esteem , may be the key to being successful in life. S elf-compassion leads  to higher levels of personal well-being, optimism and happiness, and to less anxiety and depression. Self-compassion is being willing to look at your own mistakes and shortcomings with kindness and understanding.  Then you accept that to be human is to make mistakes sometimes.  When you have problems and you are self-compassionate, you neither judge yourself harshly, nor feel the need to defend yourself loudly by talking about how good you are.  You don't need to shout loud to protect your ego. Something Just For Today - Eva Cassidy - Autumn Leaves Born  on February 2, 1963,   w hen she was nine, her father taught Eva to play the guitar and she began to play and sing at family gatherings.  At 11, Eva began singing and playing guitar in a band called Easy Street.  But d ue to her shyness, she struggled with performing in front of strangers.  Throughout the 1980s, she worked with several other bands and as well as wok ring as a propagator at a plant nursery and as a furniture painter. In her free time, she explored other artistic expressions including painting, sculpting and jewelry design.   After working with various bands, i n 1993, she was honored by the Washington Area Music Association with a  Wammie award  for the  Vocalist Jazz/Traditional  category.   The next year she was invited to perform at the event and chose to sing "Over the Rainbow".
