Don't let the smallest thing ruin your day

If one bad happens in a day try not to let it affect the day’s productiveness.

We've all had days when a bad thing happens first thing and the whole day is ruined because of it. But if you just refocus on the positive after the downfall – whatever it may be – you can turn a downward turn into an upward one.

Everyone fails at something in their life – a mis-venture or makes a million mistakes – there’s no plain sailing in life, even if it looks to be on the surface. You can never really tell what’s on someone else’s mind unless they tell you. Nor what’s bubbling beneath the surface of a smile. So try to be kind.

One of my core beliefs is there is an opportunity in every situation and due to this, a positive. That’s why I have a single sticky note on my mirror in my bedroom asking ‘What’s the opportunity in this?’ It may be small, but there is an opportunity in every situation. Perhaps it’s only the opportunity to make it easier tomorrow or the opportunity to know what to do when/if it happens next time. There’s also a positive to be found. In everything you do. Yes that’s right. I said it. It is true.

Even if you fail at something, it’ll teach you a lesson for the future, even if it isn’t relevant right now some good will come from it. Whether it’s just a lesson you keep in your memory that makes you stronger – or something that weaves itself into what you do with the rest of your life – like in my lyric writing or my How To Sundays (on my blog) where I have touched on being bullied at a young age and broken hearts. They’ve all helped me become who I am today. And I don’t regret one piece of it. They only made me stronger. And that’s what mistakes do too.

You are never a failure. Do not ever let yourself feel like one. We are all human – we are all entitle to make mistakes. It’s a part of life. And that will never change - unless we all become robots and live perfectly and that wouldn’t be fun for anybody!

Friday Recipe - Catalan Fish Stew - Rick Stein This is an everyday Catalan fish soup that is more like a stew and has several variants. Like so many Catalan dishes, it starts with a sofregit of fried garlic and tomato. A hearty Catalan fish soup; a meal in bowl. Catalan fish stew Ingredients 6 tbsp olive oil 1 large Spanish onion, chopped 2 fennel bulbs, chopped 150g/5oz chorizo, diced 1 red chilli, finely chopped 1 tsp fennel seeds, ground 2 cloves new season garlic, crushed ½tsp sweet paprika powder 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves 1 tsp saffron strands (optional) 3 fresh bay leaves 1 tin plum tomatoes 100ml/3½ fl oz fish stock or water 150ml/5 fl oz white wine 500g/1 lb 2oz mussels, cleaned 650g/1 lb 7 oz firm white fish (bream, pollock, cod, monkfish), filleted, dredged in flour and fried in olive oil 100g/3½ oz toasted almonds, ground To serve 1 lemon, cut into wedges steamed potatoes and spring greens Preparation method
